Building yourself a storage shed is no small project. First, you have to figure out the design and construction. All the measurements have to be calculated. You will then need all the materials and decide how you will move the materials. Where will you be storing it while you are building? You might have to buy new equipment such as miter saw, drill, electric sanders, ladders, etc. You may have to give up a few weekends while you are building. And be prepared for possible injuries… even professionals have them.
What Do You Want In Your Pre-Built Storage Shed?
Pre-built storage sheds not only save you time but will save you the headaches. If you are reading this, you have probably decided you would rather buy a pre built shed than build one, but how do you decide which one? We will give you some things to consider so you can make an informed decision.
Every Pre Built Storage Shed Has A Purpose
Every shed has a purpose, so these are things to consider when deciding which one?
- Will it be large enough to store everything you intend to put in it?
- Is the entryway large enough for its intended purpose?
- Does it have adequate shelves? (Shelving options)
- Do you need a loft? (Take a look at our lofts)
- Is the floor built strong enough for heavy equipment?
- Does it have enough air circulation?
- Do you need windows? If so, where do you need them?
- Will the shed fit where you intend to place it? Sometimes people misjudge the size of the shed.
- Will the doors/windows be facing the right direction when it’s placed where you want it?
Storage Sheds Design Possibilities
It’s important to consider the design. Design consideration can be divided into two areas: aesthetic and structure. You might want to consider the color. Perhaps you will want it to be a close match with other structures around it. The structure of the shed can give it a personality or a style. It could look like a barn or a cottage. It could even look like a smaller version of your house.
Do you like the style? Maybe you want something rustic or cozy. There are many design possibilities. Do you want windows? How many windows do you need? How about shutters? What about flower boxes with those shutters? Would you like a porch? What size of porch would you like? Do you want shingles or a metal roof?
As you see there are a lot of things to consider and we haven’t covered materials and construction quality. It’s important to understand what you want out of your storage shed before you invest in something too big or luxurious. At the same time, you want to make sure that there will be enough space to meet the need. You want to think through what your expectations are, so your expectations are met.
Our prebuilt storage shed has endless design possibilities.
How To Know If A Storage Shed Quality Is Good?
Price is not always a good metric for determining if a shed is well made. There is a difference between affordable and cheap. What money you saved with a cheaply made shed, you will have to use to replace it. At the same time, just because something is expensive doesn’t mean it’s quality.
Quality questions anyone who is considering buying a storage shed should ask are:
- Do they stand behind what they build?
- Does the company offer a warranty?
- How long has this company been in business?
- What materials do they use?
- How is it constructed?
A Well Made Shed Begins With A Good Foundation
Let’s start from the foundation. Skids are on the bottom of a shed that supports the structure and elevates the shed off the ground. They generally run parallel to the longest side. Skids help create stability for the storage shed. If a storage shed does not have good foundational support, it can cause leaks from the roof, windows, or walls. Warping can occur causing doors and windows to become difficult to open and close. We recommend 4×4 treated skids for necessary support.
You are also going to want treated floor joists. These are 2x4s that run parallel creating the foundation that the floor will lay on. They sit on top of the skids.
We recommend flooring that is waterproof. If it is not it will significantly shorten the life of your shed. We use tongue and groove PerformMax waterproof flooring.
Quality Walls And Roofs Are Important Too
You will want walls made to last. This is why you don’t want the wall framing spread too far apart (16” on center is good). We offer Primed SmartSide Siding with a 50-year warranty on painted sheds or rustic fir siding on natural stained buildings.
When considering roofing you will want a roof that will last a long time. We offer a choice of 30-year dimensional shingles or a 40-year metal roof. An aluminum drip edge for the roof edges are smart; otherwise, you may discover unwanted roofing problems ranging from water to pest damage.
You want to make sure the vents will adequately let out the summer heat. We use 2- 8”x16” vents (one on each end).
